Blessing of the Animals
October 13, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm
In Genesis 1:26, God completes the sixth day of creation and declares that humans should have dominion over “fish in the sea and birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” In this vision, humans are to work for the care, wellbeing, and freedom of God’s creatures, as humans do not exist to dominate creatures, but amid a mutual, interdependent Unfortunately, in too many cases, humankind has engaged in domination, rather than careful dominion.
On Sunday, October 13 at 5 p.m., Towson Presbyterian Church will host a special Blessing of the Animals service amid the beautify of creation along our Highland Ave yard. There, we will gather with creatures of the earth–those with fur, feather, scales, and wings–giving thanks that we have been made partners in the caretaking of this world.
We will also celebrate the many ways in which pets bless us, both with a caretaking purpose and a deep sense of the love, mutuality, and companionship God intends for each and all.
All (including those who’ve never experienced anything quite like this) are very much invited to come. If you have a pet and would like him/her to receive a special blessing, please bring your pet (or a photo of your pet) for a blessing. Children may also bring a stuffed animal if they wish.
