Point Person:

God not only calls us to tend to our own communities, but sends us out to care for those in need across the world. Every spring for the last 30+ years, a group of members and friends of Towson Presbyterian Church has traveled to Honduras for an intergenerational service trip. Our objectives have evolved and expanded to include medical, dental and physical therapy clinics, construction projects and community outreach in the Copan region. Our trips are open to everyone called to serve. No experience or Spanish is necessary for most positions, although you must be physically fit and able to endure long days working with no air conditioning

OUR TEAMS

Dental

Our dental team provides cleanings, sealants, fillings, and extractions for adults and children.

Medical

Our medical team provides physicals for all ages. We work with the local health clinic to coordinate follow-up care if needed.

Physical Therapy

Our newest initiative is in partnership with Copan’s new PT clinic. Our two physical therapists work with adults and special needs children. We bring as much as equipment as possible with us, including walkers, crutches, braces, gait trainers and other positioning items.

Construction

Our construction crew is led by a local Honduran, who works with TPC throughout the year to identify villages interested in ecostoves and latrines. Our team provides technical support, design and building supplies. Our local coordinator provides guidance to and coordination with the villages during the construction process.

Community Engagement

This team has the best job of all – providing activities for the children and teens waiting to see the dental and medical teams.

CASITA COPAN

We are fortunate to partner with Casita Copan Children's Home, a non-profit located in Copan Ruinas. Casita’s mission is to prevent child abandonment by providing child care, temporary foster care and support to single mothers. Throughout the pandemic and in the aftermath of the back to back hurricanes in 2021, TPC worked with Casita Copan to distribute funds and needed supplies to local villages in need of rebuilding. We provide medical and dental care to the children, mothers and staff when in Copan and help to coordinate the care of children with special needs throughout the year. To learn more about Casita Copan and donate, visit them at www.casistcopan.org or contact Lynn Krugman.

Those not able to join us in Honduras can support our initiatives with a financial donation. Funds will be used as needed to purchase supplies for the five focus areas:

  1. Dental: Donated funds will be used to purchase toothbrushes, floss, sealants, pain medications and antibiotics.
  2. Medical: We purchase a wide variety of over the counter medicines such as allergy medications, pain relievers, antacids and adult and children’s vitamins.
  3. Physical Therapy: Needs include therabands, pain relievers, assorted therapy balls and cones, exercise equipment, deep tissue massager, towels
  4. Construction: We purchase supplies such as cement, plumping, toilets, chimneys and roofing materials from the local hardware store.
  5. Community Engagement: Needs include craft materials, games, puzzles, and sports equipment.
